Aazam Movie (2023) Movie Story
Nawab Khan is a leader of a criminal group in the city, but he’s sick with blood cancer and only has a few days left to live. He controls a group of five partners who work together to run the organization. Nawab’s son, Kadar, is supposed to take over the business after his father passes away, but Kadar wants to get rid of all of his father’s associates. However, Kadar’s plan fails because the other partners have their own plans for the group. There’s also a police officer named DCP Joshi who is trying to stop the gang war, but he gets caught up in a conspiracy by one of the partners, Javed.
Aazam Movie (2023) Movie Review
Aazam is a crime drama that takes a slightly different approach to the Mumbai underworld. Instead of the usual story of cops versus gangsters, this movie focuses on internal affairs and one man’s relentless pursuit to dominate the city’s underbelly at any cost. With calculated precision, he goes on a rampage, eliminating his enemies one by one. While Aazam holds your attention and offers an interesting spectacle, there are a few missteps in the direction that prevent it from being a completely enjoyable ride.
The story revolves around Nawab Khan, the powerful mafia boss of Mumbai, who is on his deathbed. After an important meeting with the home minister, it is decided that Anya Shetty will take Nawab Khan’s place. However, Nawab Khan’s son, Kadar Pathan, and his loyal confidant, Javed, take action upon learning about this decision. They come up with a meticulous plan to eliminate each participant of the meeting. This treacherous path is filled with betrayal, deception, and danger, all unfolding over one fateful night.
Aazam brings together a talented cast, with standout performances from Jimmy Sheirgill as Javed and Abhimanyu Singh as Kadar Pathan. They bring intensity and believability to their roles. Indraneil Sen Gupta also impresses as IPS officer Ajay Joshi, adding a raw and gritty essence to the character. Writer Shravan Tiwari deserves credit for exploring new aspects of the underworld narrative. However, the direction falls short in certain aspects, lacking finesse and leaving a weaker impact.
While Aazam presents a fresh take on the Mumbai underworld, its downfall lies in the direction. If only the camera lingered a bit longer after important moments, the impact would have been stronger. Though tension is present, it doesn’t resonate fully with the audience. The film could also benefit from stronger art direction, as some scenes with chroma effects feel out of place. Additionally, the overpowering soundscapes detract from the intended impact and could have been learned from the film Satya, where the sound of gunshots alone made a bigger impact than a background score.
The filmmaker deserves credit for stepping outside the usual mafia narrative and offering a refreshing experience. Aazam contains well-crafted sequences that maintain momentum. However, the direction could have been tighter. In simple terms, the writer, Shravan Tiwari, outshines the director, Shravan Tiwari, which affects how well the movie turns out.
