Bheed Movie (2023) Movie Story
India is a diverse society that has faced challenges in the past that almost tore it apart. The recent COVID-19 pandemic was one such challenge. In April 2020, when the virus was spreading rapidly, the government ordered a nationwide lockdown. This caused many daily wage earners to walk back to their hometowns from cities, which was a difficult journey. In a fictional town called Tejpur, they were stopped at a checkpoint by a person named Surya Kumar Singh, who was in charge. He had to manage the situation and make sure that everyone followed the rules to contain the spread of the virus. This checkpoint became a microcosm of India’s diverse society, and Surya Kumar had to rise above his personal insecurities to maintain order and protect the country. The people may have looked different, but they had to feel like a united society. The goal was for India to emerge victorious.

The Covid-19 pandemic affected people’s mental health around the world. Anubhav Sinha made a movie called ‘Bheed’ which tries to show the difficulties that migrant workers faced during this time. They had no food, shelter, money, and the borders were closed, making it hard for them to get help. The film also talks about how some of them were treated unfairly because of their caste. Although a movie cannot show everything that happened, ‘Bheed’ tries to give us an idea of what it was like for these people.
At the beginning of the movie, there is a sad story about 16 workers who were hit by a train. This sets the mood for the rest of the movie, which is intense and emotional. We already know that many terrible things happened during the pandemic, and this movie reminds us of them. The writers did a good job of showing what really happened without making it seem like a big deal just for the sake of it. This makes the movie more realistic.
One thing that makes this movie different is that it is filmed in black and white. This makes it more powerful. The camera shows close-ups of the characters (migrant workers) to reveal their injuries and skinny bodies, which can be shocking to watch. Balram Trivedi is a watchman who wants to go back to his hometown with his friends and co-workers. Many people like them come to the Tejpur border, which is 1200 km away from Delhi, but the borders are closed. The person in charge, Surya Kumar Singh, says nobody can pass through. Even Madam Ji, who is rich, is stuck with them. A student named Renu Sharma sets up a medical camp near the border to help people who have Covid. Each person has their own problems, but they are all stuck there and have no way out. They only have hope to keep them going.
The characters in the movie are based on real people who went through tough times. Pankaj Kapur is great as Balram Trivedi, who is angry about what’s happening. Rajkummar Rao plays a police officer who is trying to fight against caste discrimination, but he also has personal struggles. Bhumi Pednekar plays Renu, who falls in love with him even though they come from different castes. Dia Mirza is a rich person who is sad because she can’t see her daughter. She thinks that rich people like her will be hurt more by the pandemic, but poor people are actually better at fighting it. Kritika Kamra plays a journalist who cares a lot about the story she is reporting on. Ashutosh Rana plays a senior police officer, but his role is not very big.
Anubhav Sinha’s film shows the struggles people went through during the pandemic, and it’s very realistic. The movie may make you feel uncomfortable and sad, but that’s what the director wants you to feel. Anubhav Sinha is known for making films that show difficult topics (like Mulk and Article 15), and this movie is no different.
