Farzi Web Series (2023) Story
“FARZI” follows the story of a young artist named Sunny, played by Shahid Kapoor, who uses his talents to create counterfeit currency and save his grandfather’s printing press from financial ruin. However, his actions put him in the crosshairs of a dedicated task force led by righteous officer Michael Vednayagam, played by Vijay Sethupathi, who is determined to eliminate the threat of counterfeit currency once and for all.
Sunny is a struggling artist who lives with his grandfather, Madhav Gangadhar, played by Amol Palekar. He creates portraits of people within minutes and can flawlessly copy any painting. However, he is fed up with customers who don’t respect his talent and constantly bargain for lower prices. To make matters worse, his grandfather is in debt to Ratan Lal and his son Aashirwad, played by Shiv Dev Singh and Happy Ranajit respectively. They demand repayment within a month, leaving Madhav with no choice but to shut down his printing press and discontinue his newspaper, Kranti Patrika.
Sunny is determined to save his grandfather’s business and tries various means to raise money but to no avail. Finally, he comes up with the idea of creating counterfeit currency. With the help of his friend Firoz, played by Bhuvan Arora, and using Madhav’s printing press at night, Sunny creates a replica of the Rs. 500 note. Through trial and error, they perfect their method and are able to create notes that can fool anyone. They sell the fake currency to Lakdawala, played by Lokesh Mittal, and use the money to repay Ratan Lal’s loan and save the printing press.
Meanwhile, Michael Vednayagam is leading a task force to eliminate counterfeit currency from circulation. He enlists the help of Megha Vyas, played by Raashii Khanna, to detect fake notes instantly using her invention, the CT-600 chip. However, their target is not Sunny but Mansoor Dalal, played by Kay Kay Menon, the biggest player in the counterfeit currency network.
The rest of the web series follows the cat-and-mouse chase between Sunny and Michael’s task force as they try to track down the source of the counterfeit currency. Will Sunny be caught, or will he be able to outsmart Michael and save his grandfather’s printing press? “FARZI” is a thrilling and fast-paced web series that keeps you on the edge of your seat.

Sunny (Shahid Kapoor) grew up with a deep-seated resentment towards the world after being abandoned by his father and taken in by his maternal grandfather. With the exception of his best friend Firoz (Bhuvan Arora) and his Nanu (Amol Palekar), he has no one he can call his own. Sunny starts off making abstract yet beautiful paintings, but as he struggles to help his Nanu’s age-old publication ‘Kranti’, he discovers his talent for designing ‘Farzi’ notes like no one else.
‘Farzi’ is a thrilling web series that explores a crime seldom seen on screen, and the creators Raj and DK delve deep into the intricate and technical details of making fake notes, their distribution, and infiltration into the economy. While the realistic tone of the show is commendable, the makers use a lot of cinematic convenience that feels quite unbelievable and preposterous at times, especially given the magnitude of the fiscal crime being carried out in the country and only a few good men and one woman trying to stop it.
Despite this, ‘Farzi’ uses strong characters to tell its story, with each important character being well-defined and fleshed out. However, not all of their stories are equally interesting, and the track of task force officer Michael Vedanayagam (Vijay Sethupathi) feels forced and slows down the otherwise fast-paced thriller. Some judicious editing could have made the show crisper and even more engaging. Nevertheless, there is a constant element of unpredictability and thrill that makes it an easy binge-watch. The show’s scale is impressive, from the telling cinematography by Pankaj Kumar to the use of outdoor locations and top-notch production values.
The performances in ‘Farzi’ are outstanding, with Shahid Kapoor reprising his bad-boy-with-a-heart avatar from Kaminey and getting into the skin of his character with ease. Vijay Sethupathi brings his trademark style to portray the highly motivated officer Michael, who never plays by the rulebook. The clash of these two super-strong and powerful characters fuels the narrative with huge doses of excitement. Kay Kay Menon is brilliant as the fake note kingpin Mansoor, nailing the eccentricities and quirks of his character. Bhuvan Arora surprises as Sunny’s BFF and man Friday Firoz, effortlessly making viewers fall in love with his character. Amol Palekar, a veteran actor, is perfectly cast as a principled freedom fighter who believes in the potential of the country’s youth and holds onto his fading newspaper, ‘Kranti’, with hope. Raashi Khanna impresses as Megha, a young and raring-to-go professional.
While there are too many F and MC, BC words, which are an all too familiar calling card for such shows on OTT, thankfully, only a few of them feel out of place. The dialogues, on the whole, are relevant and well-suited to each character. In summary, ‘Farzi’ is a captivating and exhilarating tale of con artists, with its positives far outweighing any negatives.
