Zara Hatke Zara Bachke Movie (2023) Story
A young couple from Indore had a plan to get divorced so they could qualify for a government scheme to buy a home. However, their plan didn’t work out as expected, and they ended up having a big disagreement. Now, it’s uncertain whether this couple, who used to be very much in love, will patch things up and get back together, or if they will choose to separate and go their own ways.

Zara Hatke Zara Bachke is a lighthearted romantic comedy set in a small town, featuring eccentric characters and a wacky plot that adds to the fun. Directed by Laxman Utekar, the movie succeeds in delivering laughter for the most part. The story revolves around Kapil Dubey (played by Vicky Kaushal) and his wife Saumya Chawla Dubey (played by Sara Ali Khan), along with their extended family.
The chaos begins when the pandit’s family accidentally consumes a cake with eggs, leading to a hilarious uproar. Kapil’s aunt (mami) teases Saumya, who is Punjabi, about the mishap, causing her to express her desire to move out and escape the constant teasing. Thus, Kapil and Saumya embark on a mission to buy a house, but soon realize they can’t afford it.
Things take a bizarre turn when Saumya discovers a government scheme to obtain a flat. However, there’s a catch: Kapil’s family already owns a house, making him ineligible. A tricky agent named Bhagwan Das (played by Inaamulhaq) shows up and proposes an idea to Saumya. He suggests that if she divorces Kapil, she could potentially qualify for the women’s quota and become eligible for the house scheme. They can then remarry once the house is allocated. From there, the story becomes a hilarious series of mishaps as the couple pretends to fight in order to convince their family and the judge that they need a divorce. The plot gets even more chaotic with the addition of a love triangle and an intrusive security guard named Daroga (played by Sharib Hashmi).
While the movie’s premise is entertaining, it stretches credibility when Kapil and Saumya decide to separate just to acquire a house, especially when they aren’t in desperate need. The first half of the film is particularly funny, but the entertainment level drops in the second half due to unrealistic and exaggerated scenes. For instance, there are instances where the couple pretends to be siblings or a government official unexpectedly shows up at Saumya’s rented apartment for verification, with Kapil present. A medical emergency subplot adds drama but doesn’t contribute much to the story. The climax feels rushed and could have been better developed.
Vicky Kaushal delivers a commendable performance, portraying the frugal small-town guy convincingly. He shines in a heartfelt scene at the hospital where Kapil and Saumya have an honest conversation to resolve their differences. On the other hand, Sara Ali Khan doesn’t quite fit the role of a middle-class daughter-in-law or a spirited Punjabi girl. The supporting cast, including Neeraj Sood and Kanupriya Pandit as Kapil’s aunt and uncle, Inaamulhaq, Rakesh Bedi as Saumya’s father, Harcharan Chawla, and Akash Khurana as Kapil’s father, deliver solid performances. The catchy songs by Sachin-Jigar and Raghav Ramadoss’s cinematography successfully capture the small-town charm and quirks of Indore.
In conclusion, Zara Hatke Zara Bachke is an enjoyable film worth watching once for its humorous dialogues, quirky characters, and good performances. However, the implausible story and average screenplay prevent it from reaching its full potential.
